===========================
Memoirs of Ralph Gallard from a letter dated 18th October 1988.

Grandfather (Harry) Henry Gallard married Kate Napier his second wife and lived out his remaining days at Abuklea Rd, Eastwood.

He Had two homes, the first "Sunnyside" was later occupied by our family, the second "Mount View" was a most substantial residence centred in an orchard of apples, pears, and peaches between Balaclava Road and Vimiera Road. As a woodworker (chiefly fencing of the post and rail type) grandfather was well known in the district and seemed to do well. He died in 1922 a grey bearded veteran at the age of 83 years.

In addition I remember father (Percy Gallard) telling me that he had helped grandfather with a bridging contract in Kissing Point Road, Dundas. Father worked at Hoskins Iron and Steel Works at Rhodes. He worked five and a half days and after returning home on Saturday at lunchtime he would take me as the carrier with him, Sid (Balty) Small, Ernie Carpenter, and Arthur (Sharter) Gallard out for a run with the gun and dogs. We often got quite good bags of rabbits and the occasional hare to supplement the family larder. In addition the family larder was helped by a home killed cured pig or calf.

After grandfather's death dad was depended upon to cart the family fruit to market, which he continued to do for some time. He was the last person to cart fruit from the district using a horse and cart. In later life after a short stint with CCC in West Queensland dad worked for the Pat Duffy family in their drainage business where he continued for a long time until a short period before his death in December 1971.

Mother [Irene Pearl Hunter] predeceased old "Blue" (Percy) departing this life in August 1968. Well loved by a large family and happy to have spent a useful year or two on the Highway with a stall purveying fruit and vegetables etc, on behalf of the local Women's RSL Auxiliary with Mrs Stan Hall.
