Joseph Singleton and Agnes Neil/Neal: Agnes was born 09.07.1815 in Windsor possible Reg no: V18156478 1B/1815 - as Lane; mother as Louisa and died 03.02.1863 in Singleton from Typhoid Reg no: 5283/1863 District: Patricks Plain - as Morris. She was buried in Whittingham Cemetery. Parents were James Knell and Lucy Lane who married about 1809 in Richmond. Agnes was only 13 years and 7 months old when she married. The witnesses at the marriage were Mary and Elizabeth Singleton. Agnes and Mary were half sisters.
Agnes’s 2nd marriage was to John Green on 17.02.1842 Reg no: V1842642 123/1842 District: Presbyterian Whittingham (Joseph had died the previous November). John Green was born about 1815/1816 in London, England. He was convicted of stealing a watch in 1833 in the Central Criminal Court, London, England and transported to Australia in 1835 aboard the “Mary Anne 2”. John got his Ticket of Leave in 1845 Maitland. John was the Licensee of the Cross Keys Inn in Singleton. He died 12.01.1852 age 36 years at the Cross Keys Inn, Singleton Reg no: V18511216 37B/1851 - age 36. He was buried in Whittingham with his son, Walter James who died 25.12.1849 age 8 months. Agnes’s 3rd marriage was to Andrew Canavan/Carnarvon on 11.12.1854 in Sydney Reg no’s: V1854711 100/1854 and V1854492 138/1854 District: St Mary’s RC Sydney - as Canavan. Andrew possibly born in Ireland and possibly died about 1909. Andrew took over the Inn licence on 20.04.1857 re-naming it ‘The Bird In The Hand’. The renewal of the licence the following year showed Agnes as the licensee. Children of Andrew Canavan and Agnes Singleton/Green nee Neil: Andrew Walter William Canavan 1857-poss 1931.
Agnes’s 4th marriage was to Joseph William Morris, a widower on 06.10.1860 at the Singleton Courthouse by Christian Poppenhagen Reg no’s: 2381/1860 District: Patricks Plain - as Joseph William and 2581/1860 District: Sofala - as Joseph N. Joseph possibly died Reg no: 5343/1863 District: Patricks Plain - parents Brabazon and Harriet. William was the Licensee of the Auckland Hotel, Rix’s Creek for a year from 18.04.1861.
(Sydney Gazette 24.4.1813) Joseph Singleton was brought before the bench of magistrates & charged with having in his possession 1 gallon of spirits, distilled in the Colony & with having distilled the same. He pleaded guilty & because of his youth & having given up the apparatus when demanded, the bench unanimously recommended his case to the clemency of the Governor. In 1822 Joseph, with his eldest brother James made a joint application to distil spirits and this was granted. By 1824 together with his father and brother, William, Joseph had left the Hawkesbury to join Benjamin at his Hunter River land grant and they became involved with Benjamin’s many ventures. In 1826 Benjamin opened the 'Barley Mow' Inn and in 1827 it was licensed to Joseph Singleton as the ‘Plough Inn’ and in 1829 he changed the name to the 'Plough and Horses'. Joseph was a landholder at 'Curryjong Brush' in 1823 and with connections to a flour mill at Curry Jong that year as well as being on a list of people a year later to whom convict mechanics had been assigned. In Nov 1824 he was listed as a Richmond miller. Joseph opened the Cross Keys Inn on 21st April 1840. It was located on the corner of John and Elizabeth Streets. Agnes took over the Inn licence when Joseph died.
