From "Hill End and Tambaroora Pioneer Register to 1920" -
William's father, Hely, arrived in Australia in 1807 on board SYDNEY COVE. He was employed by William Mannix at Upper Minto. His mother, Mary, was a convict, tried in Middlesex, England, and transported to Australia for 14 years for being in possession of forged money.
Charlotte's mother, Bethia Edwards, was born 1 Dec 1794 ad baptized 7 May 1797. Berthia's mother was Mary Edwards who was sentenced to 7 years transportation, arriving in Australia on MARY ANN 19 Mar 1790. Berthia's father was James Freeman, who arrived with the First Fleet on board ALEXANDER 1788. He received the first pardon in the colony issued by Governor Phillip 1 Mar 1788 and was the colony's first hangman. Further details on William's and Charlotte's parents can be obtained from the contributors.
In 1851 at age 17, William Toft left his apprenticeship to John Hill, Cabinet Maker and Undertaker, at King Street, Sydney for Summer Hill Creek with his partner Denis Driscoll. They found a nugget
3 lbs. He returned to Sydney with £700pounds in the bank. After a holiday, he returned to the creek, but found it too crowded, so he went on to Tuena, working on his own, and did well.
In 1853, he took the road to Adelong, working 14 miles from Tumut, where sluicing for 9 months paid well. He went back to Sydney with 600oz of gold.
By 1865, he was a butcher at Hargraves, a publican at Louisa Creek in 1867, and an innkeeper at Hargraves in 1869.
In 1870, William took the first battery made in Sydney, by dray, to Hill End. In 1872, he owned, with Robert Rawsthorne, the Pullen Battery on Post Office Flat, a fifteen-head quartz crusher that extracted the gold from the famous Holtermann nugget in 1872. He also had a share in a mine and one of the towns; prosperous stores, as well as being involved in other business interests in Hill End, where he was an alderman 3 times. The family was at Hill End from 1870-1876, approximately.
In 1876, he erected a 10-stamp stamper battery on the Macquarie River sending the washed dirt 800ft down to the river where it was crushed.
On 12 Apr 1877, William, Charlotte and some of heir children arrived by ship on the Clarence River, where he bough Wades Store in Cowper. He then acquired stores at Brushgrove, Cowper, Lawrence and Grafton, and built a wharf at Cowper and Lawrence, a slip at Cowper and punts, and inaugurated the Pullen River Boat Service on the Clarence River, with the purchase of ETHEL in July 1877. This enterprise blossomed under the leadership of their son Charles.
By 1883, he had moved to Woolgoolga, and built a sugar mill. He later built a saw mill, jetty, 2-storey store with residence and a hotel, thus earning the reputation as a true entrepreneur.
Charlotte?s father, Timothy, arrived in Australia with 200 male convicts on ADMIRAL GAMBIER 22 Dec 1808
