Text:   William was transported to Sydney Australia on the ship "Exmouth" as a convict in 1831.

He was assigned to S Wright with at least twelve other convicts [p138 '1837 Muster'].

William was tried at Nottingham Borough Quarter Sessions which tried less serious offences. The Quarter Sessions minute books are at Nottingham Archieves. Offences deemed to be more serious were tried at the Assizes Court. These records are at the Public Records Office, Kew, London. Both Assizes and Quarter Sessions trials were reported in local papers of the era. These are available at Nottingham Central Library and the National Newspaper Library, Colindale. London.

The nature of the crimes listed appear trivial by todays standards and the punishment harsh. Most were repeat offenders who had been in trouble with the law before but often driven to despair by poverty. Most on this list were sentenced to seven years transportation. A few will have died on the journey and a small number may have escaped. However, the vast majority arrived in Australiaserved out their sentenceand eventually received a ticket of leave or a certificate of freedom. Very few once free returned to England, most wanted to stay in Australia,build a new life , marry and become respected citizens.

He resided in Merton, Denman NSW in 1837. William Taylor, 26, per 'Exmouth' 1831; S Wright, Merton,NSW with at least 12 other convicts.

He resided at Locnivar NSW from 1841 to 1860 at Maitland, NSW. Shoemaker and freeholder. He worked as a shoemaker in Lochnivar from 1842 to 1849.

He resided at Singleton from 1860 to 1870. Shoemaker.

He owned land at Lake Burrumbeet in Ballarat VIC in 1866. Purchased for 85 pounds from Dinah Hardy.

He worked as a Storekeeper in 1872 in Wallabadah, NSW.

He signed a will on 17 June 1872 at Wallabadah.

He resided at Wallabadah from 1875 to 1877.

Permission was granted by the authoritios for him to marry Mary Ann Hardy on 25 October 1841 at Black Creek, West Maitland.
